GEOPOLITICS: MIDDLE EAST WAR

• EVENT (DEADLINE: FRIDAY, MARCH 27): U.S. PRESIDENT TRUMP SETS A NEW ULTIMATUM TO IRAN. U.S. President Donald Trump has postponed planned strikes on Iran’s energy infrastructure for five days, until the end of Friday (March 27), suggesting that a deal could be negotiated. However, the pause remains conditional, with strikes likely to resume if negotiations fail.
• MIDDLE EAST WAR: FOURTH WEEK. Tensions between the U.S. and Iran have remained high, with ongoing airstrikes targeting Iranian military positions and continued missile and drone attacks by Iran against U.S. bases and allied infrastructure across the Gulf.
• BREAKING: ABOUT 2,200 U.S. MARINES TO ARRIVE IN THE MIDDLE EAST BY FRIDAY (MARCH 27). The U.S. is also deploying the assault ship USS Tripoli (LHA-7) and landing dock USS New Orleans (LPD-18) to the Middle East, carrying around 2,200 Marines from the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit, and is set to arrive Friday (March 27).

• STRAIT OF HORMUTZ IS EFFECTIVELY CLOSED:

Around 20 million barrels of oil per day are unable to reach global markets.

Number of ships struck in the region since fighting began ‌rose to at least 17.

Around 700 ships are stranded near the Strait of Hormuz, including about 400 oil tankers carrying roughly 200 million barrels of crude.

• CURRENT IMPACT: This represents ~20% of global oil demand, creating a major supply shock.
• SUPPLY LOSS ACCUMULATING: Over the last 24 days, since the war began, nearly 470 million barrels of oil exports have been disrupted.
• PRODUCTION SHUT DOWNS: 8-10 MILLION BARRELS OF OIL PER DAY. Approximately 8 to 10 million barrels per day of oil production has been stopped by several Gulf producers due to the conflict, including Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Kuwait and U.A.E.

• SUPPORT AREA: $3.00 – $2.80. Despite the most recent pullback, gasoline prices have remained above the recently established support area between $3.00 and $2.80, which has held so far this week as well.
• UPTREND: The uptrend channel depicted by the daily chart below shows that gasoline prices have had positive momentum since the start of 2026.
• PRICE ACTION: GASOLINE PRICES HAVE HIT THEIR HIGHEST LEVEL SINCE JULY 2022 ($3.331). Since the start of 2026, gasoline prices have risen around 94%, hitting their highest level in almost four years ($3.331).
