NATURAL GAS: USE AND MARKET SHARE

• NATURAL GAS is mainly used for electricity generation in the U.S.A. In the U.S., Natural gas power plants supplied roughly 42%–46% of U.S. electricity during recent summers, largely because of air conditioning demand.
• MARKET SHARE (PRODUCERS): BIGGEST NATURAL GAS PRODUCERS IN THE WORLD. The U.S. is the largest producer, accounting for around 25% of global natural gas production, while Russia ranks second with about 15%. Qatar contributes roughly 4–5%, while Iran accounts for approximately 6-7% of total global production.
• MARKET SHARE (TOTAL NATURAL GAS + LNG IMPORTERS): China is the world’s largest importer, accounting for approximately 20% of global imports, followed by Japan with around 16–18%. The European Union represents the largest bloc, accounting for roughly 27% of total natural gas imports.

GEOPOLITICS: MIDDLE EAST WAR

• THE STRAIT OF HORMUZ CLOSED:  U.S. NAVAL BLOCKADE AND IRANIAN RESTRICTIONS. Despite proposals to reopen the route as part of broader negotiations, no deal has been reached. The situation remains highly important for global gas markets, as around 20–25% of global LNG exports pass through the strait, mainly from Qatar, keeping supply risk elevated.
• BREAKING (MAY): QATAR LNG (LIQUEFIED NATURAL GAS) DISRUPTIONS EXTENDED THROUGH MID-JUNE. Qatar, which accounts for around 20% of global LNG exports, continues to face constrained production and export capacity, impacting long-term supply contracts with key buyers in Europe and Asia, including Italy, Belgium, South Korea, and China.

U.S. WEATHER FORECAST

• HIGHER TEMPERATURES ACROSS THE USA (PERIOD: MAY 27 – JUNE 2). Rising cooling demand in the USA could provide support to natural gas prices as heat becomes more widespread.

EUROPE: NATURAL GAS STORAGE REFILLING SEASON IS UNDERWAY

• EUROPEAN NATURAL GAS STORAGE IS 36.60% FULL IN MAY, UP FROM 28.1% IN EARLY APRIL. European natural gas storage levels continue to rise, reaching 36.6% full in May, up from 28.1% in early April.

EVENTS:

• THURSDAY, MAY 21 AT 15:30 GMT+1: U.S. WEEKLY NATURAL GAS STORAGE DATA. Since late April, U.S. natural gas inventories have continued to rise. Injections, however, remain slightly below market expectations, as demand and consumption remain solid and are expected to improve as warmer US weather could increase air-conditioning usage in the coming summer period.

TECHNICAL ANALYSIS

• SUPPORT AREA: $3.00 - $2.70. Natural gas prices have maintained a support area between $3.00 and $2.70, which has been in place since October 2024. The daily chart below shows that prices have tended to rebound from the $3.00–$2.70 area during the period between October 2024 and May 2026.
